End of the world is on schedule

One of the more vocal doomsday salesmen of late, minister Harold Camping, has proclaimed that May 21, 2011 is the end of days – he travels around in his armada of RVs dispatched to spread the news:

“proclamation, “May 21, 2011: Judgment is Coming!”

According to Camping’s reading of the Bible, only those who are saved will enter the shiny gates of heaven on May 21…

It had been a few months since I dropped in on Harold Camping, the Oakland minister who believes the world will end May 21.

I was happy to see that Camping, a more frail 89 years than I had remembered, had at least maintained his apocalyptic sense of humor.

“I thought you were dead!” he said as we sat down in his office.

“Only a few more months,” I responded.

Camping wagged a finger at me. “One hundred twenty one days.”

Are you ready for this? – Teleportation has been achieved.

News like this is what gives me that wonderful, irksome, super-thrilled adrenaline feeling in my gut – news like this makes me wish I could be around in 200 years to see the practical macro-sized application of such mind-bending technology. In the meantime, for the quantum computing world, the success of this experiment is staggering. But we’re going to have to wait a few years before we can be teleported to grandma’s house for tea…

Researchers Succeed in Quantum Teleportation of Light Waves
Like Schrödinger’s cat, teleported light is both dead and alive

By Rebecca Boyle

In a real-life use of Schrödinger’s theoretical paradoxical cat, researchers report that they were able to quickly transfer a complex set of quantum information while preserving its integrity. The information, in the form of light, was manipulated in such a way that it existed in two states at the same time, and it was destroyed in one spot and recreated in another.

The new breakthrough is a major step toward building safe, effective quantum computers.

No felines were harmed in the making of this experiment, which actually studied wave packets of light that existed in a state of quantum superposition, meaning they existed in two different phases simultaneously. This phenomenon is described in Erwin Schrodinger’s quantum mechanics thought experiment, in which a cat is simultaneously dead and alive, depending on the state of a subatomic particle…

El Chupa-what-a?

The internet has buzzing with fresh insight into the mystery of el chupacabra, one of cryptozoology’s most fascinating and elusive beasts. This modern day vampire of the animal kingdom, traditionally thought to be a bloodsucking, dog-like creature, with a long snout and fangs, may have recently been captured on a policeman’s mounted vehicle camera. You be the judge…
